SW Trails PDX
Good for you, good for the city, good for the planet

SW Trails is a community group who's purpose is to support walking and biking in southwest Portland, Oregon, USA.
  • We organize group hikes and sponsor a regular monthly hike
  • Our volunteer crews build and maintain trails in SW Portland
  • We work with city, county and state planners to develop new walking biking opportunities in SW
  • We advocate for more resources for hiking/biking

There are so many benefits to walking and biking.  Exercise brings better health and walking/biking are fun, easy ways to get  our  much needed exercise. They also provide more opportunities for social interaction and meeting neighbors that the isolation of cars does not.  As more and more people use alternative forms of transportation it will reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions. We use our cars as well and we do not like dodging bikes and pedestrians any more than anyone else.  Improved trails will reduce the stress of driving as well.

We are committed to making SW Portland better for everyone by increasing safetly and opportunities for walkers and bikers.

Can SW Portland Go Platinum?

Earlier in 2008 the League of American Bicyclists awarded Portland, Oregon platinum status as a bicycle friendly community. Certainly there have many bike improvements in other parts of Portland and the rest of Portland is a bike friendly town. But SW Portland has not had many bike improvements and there is a lot of work to be done. SWTrails has been working on a plan for bike improvements. The plan is titled “BICYCLE FACILITIES STRATEGY to Reach Platinum Status in SOUTHWEST PORTLAND” and it will be submitted to the Portland Office of Transportation in November. We have been working on the plan for about two years and have received input from many people.
